His research interests are in developing methods and tools for life-cycle assessment of civil infrastructure systems and other industries. His research has focused on the environmental implications of transportation systems, buildings, construction, water and wastewater systems, and various service industries, and life-cycle assessment modeling using hybrid methods, environmentally augmented economic input-output analysis, and environmental performance measurement.

Her research interests include: soft robotics, community-based design; sustainable engineering, internet of things, intelligent learning systems; information retrieval and data mining; multiobjective and strategic product design; nonlinear optimization; probabilistic modeling; intelligent control and manufacturing; sensor validation, fusion and diagnostics; wireless sensor networks; multimedia and computer-aided design; design databases; design theory and methods; MEMS synthesis and computer-aided design; artificial intelligence and decision and expert systems; and gender/ethnic equity.

Kammen is the founding director of the Renewable and Appropriate Energy Laboratory (RAEL), Co-Director of the Berkeley Institute of the Environment, and Director of the Transportation Sustainability Research Center. He has founded or is on the board of over 10 companies, and has served the State of California and US federal government in expert and advisory capacities.
