Eligibility and Procedures

Engineering and Business for Sustainability – Certificate Program at the University of California, Berkeley

Eligibility

There is no separate admissions process for the EBS Certificate. The EBS Certificate Program is open to any current UC Berkeley graduate student who:

  • is enrolled in a Master’s or Ph.D. degree-granting program;
  • maintains an overall UC Berkeley GPA of at least 3.0 in his or her graduate studies;
  • has no more than two “incomplete” grades on his or her graduate school transcript; and
  • is able to meet the EBS Certificate course requirements described below.

EBS Certificate Requirements

To earn the EBS Certificate, eligible students must follow these steps:

(Step 1) Enroll in the EBS Certificate Program by filling out and submitting the following two forms:

  • The EBS Certificate Program enrollment form, which is available here. (If you can’t open the file, save it to your computer first.) The completed enrollment form should be emailed to Professor Horvath at horvath@ce.berkeley.edu
  • The UC Berkeley “Graduate Petition for Change of Major or Degree Goal” form (found here). Please have the form signed by your department’s academic affairs staff member, and then email the form to Professor Horvath at horvath@ce.berkeley.edu

These two forms should be submitted in the same email (Subject: EBS Certificate enrollment) by you at least four weeks before the end of the semester  in which you will complete the EBS course requirements (described in Step 2).

(Step 2) Fulfill the EBS course requirements during your graduate studies. To earn the EBS Certificate, a student must complete at least three units of EBS-approved courses in three of the four different EBS thematic course areas. More information on the EBS course requirements can be found on the course requirements page.

(Step 3) Request the award of the EBS Certificate by filling out and submitting the EBS Certificate request form, which is available here. (If you can’t open the file, save it to your computer first.) You may request the award of the EBS Certificate when you are in your final semester of EBS-approved courses. You must be registered at UC Berkeley during the semester in which you request the EBS Certificate. The EBS Certificate form must be submitted at least four weeks prior to the end of the semester in which you request the EBS Certificate.

Obtaining the EBS Certificate

The award of an EBS Certificate is acknowledged in two ways. First, the EBS Certificate will appear on a student’s official UC Berkeley graduate school transcript with designation of the semester and year in which the EBS Certificate was awarded. Second, official paper copies of the EBS Certificate will be available from the UC Berkeley Office of the Registrar.

To obtain a paper copy of the EBS Certificate, a student can pick up the EBS Certificate in person at the Office of the Registrar, Student Services Office (120 Sproul Hall). Please note that paper copies of the EBS Certificate will not typically be available until 3-4 months after the end of the semester in which the EBS Certificate was awarded.

Alternatively, a student can request that the EBS Certificate be sent via mail. To request an EBS Certificate via mail, check your CalCentral account or contact the Registrar’s Office. Note that there are fees associated with mail requests.
