Eligibility and Procedures

Engineering and Business for Sustainability – Certificate Program at the University of California, Berkeley

Eligibility

There is no separate admissions process for the EBS Certificate – only a registration process. The EBS Certificate Program is open to any current UC Berkeley graduate student who:

  • is enrolled in a Master’s or Ph.D. degree-granting program;
  • maintains an overall UC Berkeley GPA of at least 3.0 in their graduate studies;
  • has no more than two “incomplete” grades on their graduate school transcript; and
  • is able to meet the EBS Certificate course requirements described below.

EBS Certificate Requirements

To earn the EBS Certificate, eligible students must follow these steps:

(Step 1) Enroll in the EBS Certificate Program by filling out and submitting the following two forms:

  • The EBS Certificate Program enrollment form, which is available here. (If you can’t open the file, save it to your computer first.) The completed enrollment form should be emailed to Professor Horvath at horvath@ce.berkeley.edu – together with the
  • The UC Berkeley “Graduate Petition for Change of Major or Degree Goal” form (found here). Have the form signed by your department’s graduate academic affairs staff member (in Civil and Environmental Engineering: Jessica Zhang, jesszhang@berkeley.edu).

These two forms should be submitted in the same email (Subject: EBS Certificate enrollment) to Professor Horvath (horvath@ce.berkeley.edu) by you at least four weeks before the end of the semester in which you will complete the EBS course requirements (described in Step 2).

(Step 2) Fulfill the EBS course requirements during your graduate studies. To earn the EBS Certificate, a student must complete at least three units of EBS-approved courses in three of the four different EBS thematic course areas. More information on the EBS course requirements can be found on the course requirements page. Course substitutions are not accepted.

(Step 3) Request the award of the EBS Certificate by filling out and submitting the EBS Certificate request form, which is available here. (If you can’t open the file, save it to your computer first.) You may request the award of the EBS Certificate when you are in your final semester of EBS-approved courses. You must be registered at UC Berkeley during the semester in which you request the EBS Certificate. The EBS Certificate form must be submitted at least four weeks prior to the end of the semester in which you request the EBS Certificate.

Obtaining the EBS Certificate

The certificate will be officially noted on your graduate school transcript as evidence of completion, provided all material is submitted and processed before your primary degree is processed. Late EBS forms after graduation cannot be accepted. A ceremonial digital certificate is available by request from Jessica Zhang (jesszhang@berkeley.edu).
