Eligibility

There is no separate admissions process for the EBS Certificate. The EBS Certificate Program is open to any UC Berkeley graduate student who:

  • is enrolled in a Master's or Ph.D. degree-granting program;
  • maintains an overall UC Berkeley GPA of at least 3.0 in his or her graduate studies;
  • has no more than two "incomplete" grades on his or her graduate school transcript; and
  • is able to meet the EBS Certificate course requirements described below.

EBS Certificate Requirements

To earn the EBS Certificate, eligible students must follow the steps below:

(Step 1) Enroll in the EBS Certificate Program by filling out and submitting the following two forms:

  • The EBS Certificate Program enrollment form, which is available here. Completed enrollment forms should be emailed to ebs@ce.berkeley.edu.
  • The UC Berkeley "Graduate Petition for Change of Major or Degree Goal" form, which is available here. Please refer to the following instructions for completing and submitting this form.

These two forms should be submitted at least one semester prior to completing the EBS course requirements, which are described in Step 2.

(Step 2) Fulfill the EBS course requirements during your graduate studies. To earn the EBS Certificate, a student must: (a) complete the mandatory one-unit seminar course (CE 292A); and (b) complete at least three units of EBS-approved courses in three of the four different EBS thematic course areas. More information on the EBS course requirements can be found on the course requirements page.

(Step 3) Request the award of the EBS Certificate by filling out and submitting the EBS Certificate request form, which is available here. You may request the award of the EBS Certificate when you are in your final semester of EBS-approved courses, or in any subsequent semester after you have fulfilled the EBS course requirements. You must be registered during the semester in which you request the EBS Certificate. The EBS Certificate form must be submitted at least eight weeks prior to the end of the semester in which you request the EBS Certificate.

Obtaining the EBS Certificate

The award of an EBS Certificate is acknowledged in two ways. First, the EBS Certificate will appear on a student's official UC Berkeley graduate school transcript with designation of the semester and year in which the EBS Certificate was awarded. Second, official paper copies of the EBS Certificate will be available from the UC Berkeley Office of the Registrar.

To obtain a paper copy of the EBS Certificate, a student can pick up the EBS Certificate in person at the Office of the Registrar, Student Services Office (120 Sproul Hall). Please note that paper copies of the EBS Certificate will not typically be available until 3-4 months after the end of the semester in which the EBS Certificate was awarded.

Alternatively, a student can request that the EBS Certificate be sent via mail. To request an EBS Certificate via mail, please fill out and submit a diploma request form, which is available here. Under the degree field on the diploma request form, the student should list "EBS Certificate" and indicate the semester and year in which the EBS Certificate was awarded. Please note that there are fees associated with mail requests. A student may also request that an EBS Certificate be mailed along with the student's diploma at no additional cost. In this case, under the degree field the student should list both the EBS Certificate and the diploma.
